LEBANESE CONSTITUTIONALISM AND THE POLITICAL-THEOLOGICAL MIDDLE EAST

Chibli Mallat, Visiting professor at Sciences Po Law School, will present a chapter from his book in preparation on the birth of the Lebanese Constitution of 1926 (still in force), its confessional/communal characteristics, and the difficult governance of the system, in the light of the recently discovered archives of its principal author, the jurist, banker and statesman Michel Chiha (d. 1954). The chapter and discussion will focus in particular on the place of the Lebanese Constitution in the political-theological configuration of the contemporary Middle East, and the constitutional aporias that hinder coexistence in the region and make peace difficult.
